Hi everyone!
Here I am with a new post. Today we speak of what we must do to keep your bunny clean and healthy.
Bunnies are very clean animals, even cats, so they think themselves to clean, however there are some precautions that should be taken. Let's see what its are.
The cage
Obviously it don't clean itself! You have to clean it at least twice a week emptying the contents and wiping with a sponge that you will use only for this operation. Use water and a thimbleful of microscopic and delicate soap as neutral as possible, as always the intimate soap is the best. The key at this point is to rinse the cage as best as possible, shall not be any trace of soap because, even if we use a mild and delicate soap, it is always a chemical agent that may cause annoyance to their delicate skin. When the cage is dry, spray a little animal sanitizing (first make sure it's okay for rabbits, I remind you that several products for cats are toxic to them), this step is not mandatory, but it can help prevent dermatitis and minor troubles. The cage is now clean and fragrant!
The litter
In market there are various types, there are three main: the gravel or litter, wood shavings plywood and the pellet (compressed wood in the shape of cylinders). After trying all three types I can say with certainty that the best is the pellet, because it absorbs and retains better a minimum odors, especially in summer; unfortunately, bunny pellet litter is a bit expensive, then what? Simple! Buy the pellet used for the heater, they sell it in DIY stores and household goods. Put in the cage a layer of pellets and then a layer of dry hay, so our bunnies will not get hurt with claws. After this operation, the cage is ready to accommodate our bunny.
Paws
Every now and then it may happen that our bunnies getting dirty paws because, alas, walking on dirty litter... Upstream it would be better if they had the cage divided into sections, one where they eats, one where they makes their needs and the rest for play and relax; I confess that I tried to do several times this division, but Romeo has always made his own! So if your bunny is stubborn and them paws dirty, you can clean them with wet wipes specific for animals hair, I recommend you never use these wipes to clean the intimate parts or the inside of the ears of rabbits, you may risk irritation to no avail.
Check them out!
Check your bunny often, especially in the interior of the ears, nose and private parts: its must be kept clean; if not, call your vet. You can understand a lot about the health of your bunny simply by controlling: for example, if the inside of the front paws dirty he/she may be cooled, because of course they use their paws to wipe the nose.
The hair
At certain times of the year, bunnies lose several hairs. To prevent the emergence of a hairball in the stomach to force lick, you should make it a habit to spend on a hair brush that eliminate excess hair, the adhesive you use on your clothes, and you have to brush them with a soft brush or a fine-tooth comb, remind to be very very delicate.
The claws
Cut the claws is a task that falls to us. In nature its shorten force to dig and go on the ground, but our bunnies live with us, and in most cases they walk on tiles that do not help at all in filing their super strong nails. Arm yourself with patience and the special clippers sells in pet stores. You have to be more careful because under bunnies nails there are many nerve endings. If you look at the claw it has a first part that keeps getting white rose, just like ours, but beware! You don't have to cut the top of the white part, because there are still blood vessels; for not making mistakes and accidentally hurt your bunny is best to check the claws more often rather than less often cut close to the pink part. Another important thing is to pay attention to sudden movements: your bunny hardly will be standing there to get a manicure! Personally I found a method that works with Romeo, but may not be valid for all the bunnies: do you remember when you take a kitten by the scruff? I tried with Romeo, without pulling him out! In practice, I keep him in my arms, I take it gently but firmly by the collar with one hand and with the other cue the claw (it's easier to do than to say); alternatively ask for help from someone, one of the two holding the bunny catch (delicate, I recommend!) and the other cuts the claws, I suggest you tocover their eyes during this operation, they should be more calm.
The pesticide
Let's speak briefly of the pesticide: your best friend is a vet, always remember that! However I can tell you that if the bunny doesn't come out of the house, you probably don't need to use them. Just in case you have a dog or a cat in the house, you need to protect your bunny. Not all pesticides are good for them, some are (guess what?) toxic. Even the pesticides used on the other house pets should be safe for bunnies. So be careful with the choice of the pesticide and ask to the vet.
Now that we have a smattering of attention paid to have for our furry loving bunnies, always remember to consult your vet if you have any further questions, especially about their health, and to love them as they love you, then soooooooooo much!
